How can we bring our hardest questions to God when trauma has left us with pain, confusion, and uncertainty? And what if the Psalms of lament can become a resting place where we are free to be honest about our suffering and discover that God meets us there?
Former Navy Chaplain Nick Hamilton has spent 25 years walking alongside people in some of the darkest moments of their lives, including deployments to Iraq, serving aboard an aircraft carrier on 9/11, and working inside Guantanamo Bay. As the director of ethics at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City and author of Making Friends with Darkness: Finding Spiritual Healing After Trauma or Loss, Nick brings a unique perspective to the spiritual wounds that can follow trauma and loss. As a veteran himself, his story and work offer a meaningful perspective as we prepare to honor those who have served our country on Veteran’s Day.
In this episode, Davey sits down with Nick to talk about how the Psalms of lament give us a place to bring our real questions and pain to God, what it looks like to notice God's presence in the aftermath of trauma, and how we can begin to pursue spiritual healing when suffering has left us struggling to understand God, ourselves, or our faith.
Released ahead of Veteran’s Day in honor of those who have served, this conversation is an invitation to remember that trauma and suffering do not have to be hidden from God. If you've ever walked through trauma or loss, struggled to reconcile your pain with your faith, or needed a safe place to bring your hardest questions to God, this episode is for you.
"He knows what we are going through in those deepest moments of our lives, He physically understands the pain, He understands the psychological and spiritual pain, and the questions that come with it."
